  • Before lighting a cigar, you need to cut it properly. For the purpose, you should make use of cigar cutter, especially a double guillotine one.
  • Now, you need to get the right lighting material. Butane lighters or wooden matches are the best for lighting a cigar. This is because they do not introduce chemicals or other flavors or substances into the cigar.
  • With one hand, grip the your cigar around the band (or about an inch or two from the head), making use of your thumb, index finger, middle finger and ring finger (if necessary).
  • Bring the cigar up to your lips and place it in your mouth.
  • Take the light in the other hand and position the end of your cigar just above the top of the flame. Make sure that you do not let the cigar actually touch the flame.
  • Now is the time when you start puffing on the cigar.
  • While continuing to puff, slowly rotate the cigar.
  • Continue to puff and rotate the cigar until the tobacco around the outer rim begins to glow and the smoke starts drawing easily.
  • The time that you need to keep puffing and rotating the cigar above the flame will depend upon the size of the cigar. The usual time is 10 to 20 seconds.
