The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a breed of dog that is said to have originated in Wales. It is believed to be one of the oldest herding breeds, descended from the Pomeranian, Keeshond, Schipperkes and the Swedish Vallhund. The Corgi breed of dogs has been used over time as vermin hunter, cattle driver and farm guard. History
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is said to have been in Wales for over 3000 years and is counted amongst the oldest of all herding dog breeds. The word “corgi” is actually “cor gi” in Welsh, and is translated as “dwarf dog”. While the Corgi was initially used only as a farm guardian, it eventually took over the role of herder and cattle drover, among other responsibilities. Originally, this breed on dogs included only brindle and red variants, but with time, its colors began to include tricolor and blue merle, due to its crossbreeding with collies.
 
Appearance
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a short, but long dog, which has a level top-line. The head is proportionate to the rest of its body, with the skull being broad, flat, rounded and tapered. The nose is generally black and the eyes are medium to large in size, with dark rims. The teeth are extremely sharp. As far as the ears are concerned, they are erect and are proportionate to the rest of the body, being moderately large at the base and round at the ends. A prominent breastbone is seen at the deep chest. The tail is long and low-set and the legs are very short. The paws of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi are rounded and rather large, with the front feet turned out slightly. It has a double coat with thick, short, weather-resistant fur. The undercoat is shorter than, and not as coarse as, the outer coat. The legs, neck, chest and parts of muzzle usually bear white marking.
 
Temperament
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a very obedient, intelligent dog that loves to please its owners. It is very wary of strangers, but is rather social in nature. The dog is excellent with children and is an excellent show dog, because of its obedience. It can be rather combative with other dogs, if the owners do not make it understand that aggressiveness should be avoided. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi also makes a great watch dog, despite its size. This dog breed is known to be very reliable and dedicated to the owner. It also socializes very well, more so, when young. These dogs are very protective of their masters and family. There are no known genetic diseases to affect the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. However, it gains weight easily and is prone to back disorders, PRA and glaucoma.
 
Grooming
The coat of a Cardigan Welsh Corgi is easy to groom. Brush the coat and comb out the fur with a firm bristle brush. Bathe the dog only when it is absolutely necessary. The breed shed its coat twice a year. Over all, the dog is high on maintenance.
