In this world of hectic lifestyle, erratic eating habits, lack of regular exercise and wrong postures, lower back pain has come to be one of the most common ailments affecting people. The most common reason for the pain is indulging in strenuous tasks, such as lifting heavy furniture or doing yard work, which put a pressure on the back. If you have injured your back in a demanding situation and are looking for some tips for getting relief, then this article is perfect for you. Go through the following lines and explore a few home remedies for lower back pain.

Lower Back Pain Remedies
  • In order to get relief from lower back pain, it is advisable to give your back some rest. For the purpose, lie on your back on the floor, keeping one pillow under your head and one under your knees. This will help ease the pressure and weight off your back.
  • There is another way you can take pressure off your lower back. In this case also, you will be required to lie on your back on the floor and keep a pillow under your head. This time, keep your hips and knees bent, while placing the feet on a chair.
  • Applying heat to the lower back can also help alleviate the pain. For the purpose, you can make use of hot water bottles or heating pads. Use heat for 20 to 30 minutes at a time.
  • Potato poultice has been found to be very effective in treating lower back pain. Boil unpeeled potatoes and mash them thoroughly. Spread them on thick gauze, adding another sheet of gauze on top. After making sure that the temperature is not too hot, place the poultice on lower back. Wrap it with a dry cloth and let it remain in place till it gets cold.
  • Garlic oil helps bring relief from lower back pain. Put 4-5 tablespoon of oil, sesame oil, coconut oil or mustard oil, in a pan and heat it. Put 10 small garlic cloves in the oil and fry them, on a low flame, till they turn light brown. Remove the oil from fire and strain it. After it cools down, apply on the lower back and keep it on for about three hours.
Some Tips
  • Never ever bend while trying to lift an object from the floor or some other low area. Rather, bending your hips and knees, squat down and hold the object close to your body. Now, keeping your back straight, lift your body up, avoiding any twisting movement.
  • Whenever you have to move a heavy object, try to push it away and not pull it towards you.
  • If you have to sit at your desk or drive a vehicle for long hours, try to take a few stops in between and stretch your back.
  • Try to wear flat shoes all the time and avoid heels altogether. If that is not possible, stick to heels that are 2.5 cm (1 inch) or lower.
  • At times when you have to stand for long periods, try to rest one foot on a low stool, switching it with the other every 5 to 15 minutes. This will relieve the pressure on your lower back.
  • Always try to maintain the correct posture - ears, shoulders and hips in a straight line, head up and stomach pulled in.
