A traditional Chinese herbal tea, chrysanthemum tea is made from dried chrysanthemum flowers. This herbal tea has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Also known as Ju Hua, the flowers are a rich source of vitamin C, beta-carotene, calcium, fiber, folacin, iron, magnesium, niacin, potassium and riboflavin. The tea is prepared by steeping the dry flowers in hot water for about 5 minutes. The transparent yellow color of the tea has a strong floral aroma and a natural sweet taste. Chrysanthemum tea has several medicinal benefits and is used for treating high fevers, influenza and flu, strengthening lungs, relieving heat of the upper body, improving eyesight and relieving eye pains. However, the tea has certain side effects and hence, cannot be consumed by everyone.   • A person can also experience photosensitivity dermatitis as one of the side effects of chrysanthemum tea, due to the presence of the chemical alantolactone in the flower. In such a condition, the skin gets highly sensitive to sunlight exposure.
  • Chrysanthemum tea should be avoided by diabetic people, who are under insulin, since the tea can interact with insulin.
  • Due to the sedative properties, this herbal tea tends to lower blood pressure. Hence, people under high blood pressure medicines or sedatives should keep away from chrysanthemum tea as it can increase the effects of these medicines. 
  • Due to the tea’s inference with the effects of other medicines, it should be avoided by people who are taking anticancer, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory medicines.
  • People who are allergic towards the members of the daisy family should not consume chrysanthemum tea, as they are more likely to get allergic to this herbal tea. Skin rash is one of the mild symptoms of this allergy and can lead to asthma and hives, when the condition worsens.
