Elephantiasis is a painful disease that disfigures a person with swollen limbs. Read the article below on the causes, symptoms, and treatment of elephantiasis.

What Is Elephantiasis?

Also known as lymphatic filariasis, elephantiasis is a disease that has been aptly named for what it does. It makes the body of a person grow like an elephant. The victim may not show any apparent signs of the disease till it reaches its advanced stage. That is why, only when a person reaches fifteen to thirty years of age, the symptoms start showing overtly. There is an enormous enlargement of the skin and tissues. In men, the legs, arms and genitals are the areas which get swollen. Women experience enlargement usually in their legs, breasts and genitalia. Developing nations of the world where mosquitoes still pose a major threat are rife with cases of lymphatic filariasis. The parasitic worms responsible for the disease in human beings are transmitted by female mosquitoes. The worms gradually collect near the lymph nodes and block the flow of lymph in the body. This has a crippling effect on the body’s normal defences. Ancient Persian and Indian writings dating centuries back attest to the occurrence of monstrous swellings of the legs, genitals and arms. Hitherto, no vaccine or quick fix solution is available to treat this dreaded disease. It is approximated that of the 120 million people suffering from elephantiasis, India is host to one-third of the victims. The remaining two-thirds live in Africa, South Asia, the Pacific and the Americas. Read the article given below to know more on the causes, symptoms and treatment of elephantiasis.

Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Elephantiasis

Causes
  • It is caused by an infection of parasitic worms. When the lymph flow in the body is obstructed by worms such as Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori - three kinds of roundworms transmitted in the larval form into the body by certain species of infected female mosquitoes through their bites - it wreaks havoc in the lymphatic system.
  • Increased presence of worms in the lymph nodes causes the affected body part to swell and harden.
  • With the lymph vessels getting blocked over a long period of time, excess lymphatic fluids start collecting in the tissues resulting in swelling of tissue under the skin.
  • Sometimes elephantiasis can also be caused by lymphatic tissues getting blocked because of chemical particles. Chemicals found in red soil penetrate through the skin of agrarian people who work unshod in the vicinity of volcanic mountains. As a result, the feet burn and swell.

Symptoms
  • The limbs of the body undergo massive enlargement. Initially the victim may complain of general lethargy and localized pain.
  • There is enlargement of the lymph nodes in the affected areas.
  • The skin appears ulcerated, darkened and hardened, although initially, the skin might look soft because of swelling.
  • Bones and joints become severely painful. The victim also suffers from frequent high fever.

Treatment
  • Diethylcarbamazine or DEC is administered to kill the microfilariae (larval forms of the parasitic worms). Treatment using DEC may entail multiple courses to prevent the remaining adult worms from reproducing.
  • Another drug is Ivermectin. It is known to work even better when administered along with DEC by ridding the blood of microfilariae post-treatment for almost a year.
  • Surgery can also be performed to remove excess fatty and fibrous tissue and the dead worms. However, it is not always a feasible method as it is a long-drawn process involving a series of operations.
