We often wonder how the people who run laundry services end up cleaning even the most disastrous stains that usually make us scream with pure horror. We find ourselves wondering what kind of soap they use. Or is it just in their hands? Sometimes, the most effective cleaners are those who may never know the chemical formula of a detergent or basic soap; they may even be too illiterate for us to ever give them any regard, till they return our clothes – stain-free, squeaky clean and fresh smelling. We fight down a very strong urge to ask them what they use as a detergent for we know the answer to that question – a smug, “It’s a family secret.” If only we could get to know what these people used to clean the stains that made us lose hope. Making Homemade Laundry Detergent & Soap
Recipe #1 (Colloidal)
- 1 litre Boiling water
- 2 handful Bar soap
- 2 cups Borax
- 2 cups Washing soda
Directions
Finely grate the bar of soap and add it to the boiling water. Keep stirring forcefully till all the soap has melted completely. Till the soap is melted completely, you could keep the flame low. Pour this colloidal solution into a clean pail and add the washing soda and borax. Stir well until both have dissolved. Add 2 gallons of water to it and stir well until totally mixed. Cover this pail and, every time you need to wash clothes, use ¼ cup of this mixture. However, make sure you mix well before using, as it has a tendency to turn into gel.
Recipe #2 (Powdered)
Ingredients
- 2 cups of Naphtha soap
- 1 cup Borax
- 1 cup Washing soda
Directions
Finely grate the naphtha soap and mix all these ingredients in an airtight plastic container. You could use two spoonfuls of this mixture per load of clothes.
