Natural Home Remedy Tick Repellent

What makes the ticks tick? Maybe because they are very difficult to find and remove and are also very hardy creatures. They attach to the host by digging in the mandibles and feeding tube into the skin. Ticks affect both humans and animals. They are parasites that attach to the host and derive their sustenance – blood, from them. When the tick season comes around, they can appear in thousands trying to hook onto any host that passes by. That is why pets are more at a risk because they tend to wander in all those places that harbor ticks. In addition, since most pets are covered in fur, the ticks are very hard to detect. In animals, a swarm of ticks can prove to be mortal, especially in sick and undernourished ones as they not only suck the blood but also transmit many diseases; the most common, in humans, is the Lyme disease. It is always better to know the various ways in which you can ward of ticks so that you can protect both your pets and your family. Finding And Removing Fleas And Ticks
  • To keep your pets free from fleas and ticks, inspect your pets each day and after each outing. Check the pets toes, the ears, the armpits and around the tail and heads.
  • To check for fleas comb the pet with white paper. If you see tiny black specks fall on the paper then those are fleas.
  • There are specialized flea combs that can be used to search and remove fleas. To make the comb more efficient, dab some petroleum jelly on the tines so that the ticks and fleas stick to it.
  • Before combing, soak a cotton ball in alcohol and rub the coat fur with it.
  • You can also use tweezers or a tick scoop to get rid of tics and bugs.
  • Give a bathe to your pets in neem water. This effectively removes the fleas and ticks. For this, you have to soak a handful of neem leaves in warm water and leave it for one hour. Let the water cool and then bathe your pets.
  • If you find a tick then remove it from the pet’s body. Ticks grip the pet skin very tightly, so, you should grasp the head of the tick with tweezers and pull it until it releases the grip. Do not crush the tick as it may release the disease spreading secretions.
  • While pulling, if the head breaks off then use a sterile needle to pull it off. Wash the tick bite with soap and water and then apply an antibiotic.
  • Another method to remove tick is to soak a cotton bowl in liquid soap. Rub the tick with this cotton ball for 15 minutes by which the tick will come off.
  • To kill the ticks drown them in rubbing alcohol, as they do not drown in water. You can also wrap them in a tissue paper and flush it down a toilet.
  • After removing the tick always, swab the area with an antiseptic.
Natural Prevention
  • Healthy pets have fewer ticks and other parasites. So, always keep your pets healthy.
  • Avoid stress in the pets.
  • Add half a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast to the pet’s daily diet to provide B complex vitamins.
  • Give small quantities of garlic to the pets. Garlic makes the animal taste unpleasant to the fleas and ticks. You can give garlic by grating it to the pet’s food.
  • While bathing, shampoo the pet with citrus oil. This is also very good in removing fleas and ticks.
  • Also, rinse the fur with apple cider vinegar. Fleas and ticks cannot tolerate the smell and so leave the pet alone.
  • In the collar area of the pet, put a drop of lemon oil or rosemary oil.
  • Another good way to repel ticks is to use a mixture of lavender, lemongrass, and geranium oils.
  • Mixture of lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, and citronella is quite effective in repelling fleas.
  • There are many other natural repellents like cedar, eucalyptus, myrrh, neem and rosewood.
  • Yet another easy homemade repellent is to use lemon. Take 6 lemons and cut in half. Boil these in a quart of water and steep for a few hours. Strain the solution and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the pet’s fur but avoid the eyes.
  • To repel ticks from the collars add a few drops of rose geranium on it.
