Tips For Getting Rid Of Morning Sickness

  • Prefer taking four to six small meals in a day, instead of three heavy ones. Long gaps between meals and eating too much at one meal can cause nausea.
  • Do not starve yourself before you eat something. Eat small meals throughout the day as well as whenever you feel hungry.
  • Eat in bed to avoid an empty stomach and keep blood sugar on an even keel.
  • As soon as you wake up in the morning, have crackers or dry toast. Rest for around 20 to 30 minutes and then get up from the bed.
  • Whenever you feel nauseated, have bland foods, like crackers, gelatin, broth, ginger ale, saltine crackers and pretzels.
  • Do not take too many fluids with meals. Instead, drink small amounts of fluids between meals.
  • Try to eat and drink something that contains ginger. Drink ginger ale, eat ginger candies or sip ginger tea.
  • Take foods that are high in proteins and complex carbohydrates, such as peanut butter, celery, nuts, cheese, crackers, milk, cottage cheese and yoghurt, to fight nausea.
  • Have a snack that is high in protein and complex carbohydrates, just before you go to bed.
  • If you are vomiting, drink plenty of fluids, as they are easier to digest than solids.
  • To combat the nauseated feeling, take herbal teas, fruit juices, milkshakes and popsicles. Reduce your intake of tea and coffee.
  • Avoid or reduce the use of spices and fats. Fried food can make the nausea all the more worse.
  • Get extra sleep and relax a lot, as both physical and emotional fatigue can exacerbate morning sickness.
  • Minimize your stress, as morning sickness is more common in women who are under a great deal of stress, either at work or at home.
  • Carry a lollipop or candy when you get into the car, to avoid any sickness.
  • Smell nice things, as your sense of smell is very sensitive during pregnancy. Smell lemon, vanilla, peppermint or anything that you enjoy.
  • Add a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a cup of warm water and consume it. This will neutralize your stomach and settle it.
  • Sleep as much as you can. Since you are pregnant, your body would be going through many changes, thus take frequent naps during the day, go to bed early or get up late in the morning.

Tip

  • To compensate for the nutrients missed through not eating or throwing up, take prenatal vitamin supplements.
