Traditional Thai Massage

An age-old technique, Thai massage is believed to have been initiated by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, the physician to Lord Buddha, in India. The art, based on Ayurveda and yoga, is believed to have been brought to Thailand by Shivago Komarpaj. It was there that traditional Chinese medicine gradually influenced its techniques and principles and the massage came to its present form. Thai massage is a manual medicine branch of traditional Thai medicine and includes elements of yoga, shiatsu and acupressure in it. It works with the energy pathways of the body and the therapy points that are located along these lines.

In Thailand, the massage is referred to as "nuat phaen boran", which literally means 'ancient-manner massage'. Traditional Thai massage is also known as Thai yoga massage, because the process involves stretching and deep massaging. During the massage treatment, the masseur uses his hands, knees, legs and feet into a series of yoga-like stretches. As a result, the massage opens the joints, relieving the tension in surrounding muscles and allowing prana or healing energy to move more freely throughout the body.

Traditional Thai massage completely rejuvenates the mind, body and soul of an individual. As compared to other classic forms of massage therapy, this massage is much more energizing and rigorous. It stimulates the senses of a person, thereby relaxing and soothing his mind and body. Apart from using Ayurveda and yoga, the therapy also includes muscle compression, joint mobilization and acupressure.
