Located in the eastern area of north-central United States of America, Michigan is a popular tourist attraction. The name of the state is derived from the lake of the same name, which in turn has been derived from Ojibwa term ‘Mishigami’ meaning ‘large lake’. This place is bounded by five great lakes and boasts of having the longest freshwater shoreline in the world. In fact, recreation on the lake is such an essential part of life for people here, that Michigan ranked third for the number of registered recreational boats in the year 2005! The lakes that border Michigan from east to west are Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, besides Lake Saint Clair. Besides lakes, Michigan has a number of tourist attractions and places to see for tourists.
The tallest building in Detroit, Renaissance Center is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Michigan. This building was constructed in 1976 and is the world headquarters of General Motors. The Observation Tower is at the 72nd floor and the interiors of the building have been made more visitor friendly, after much dispute on the complicated layout. The Marriott Renaissance Hotel and The Summit, which is a revolving top floor restaurant, are located in the central tower. The lower floor has a number of shops that can be visited on your way out.
A popular tourist attraction in Michigan is the Detroit zoological park. Kids and adults alike will love the zoo and its recently renovated settings. There are more than 5000 animals in natural settings and one can have a look around the zoo on a tractor train. The recent additions include Amphibiville for amphibians and reptiles, a chimpanzee enclosure, a penguin exhibit and a model farm. It is also one of the oldest zoos in the nation, which is what makes it all the more special to visit.
The great Michigan Lake is a sight not to be missed at any cost. It is one of the major tourist attraction spots and people come here to explore the various recreation options. Right from fishing to boating to swimming to adventure water sports or simply watching the beautiful sunset, the lake offers something for everyone to enjoy thoroughly.
