Laryngitis Remedies

Getting up in the morning with a croaking voice after cheering and shouting wildly for your favorite team at last night’s game is something all of us might have faced at some point of time in our lives. Losing your voice for a couple of days is a frustrating and painful experience, as we all know. The medical term for this is laryngitis and is the result of inflammation of the larynx or the voice box. The most common cause for laryngitis is the bacterial, viral, or fungal infection of the larynx. Common cold, allergies, and respiratory conditions like bronchitis and sinusitis all are major causes of laryngitis. Straining the vocal cords by yelling and shouting for a long duration of time can also inflame the larynx. Smoking is the major cause of chronic laryngitis. One unexpected cause of laryngitis is GERD or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease in which the stomach juices are regurgitated into the throat and lungs causing heartburn, asthma, and hoarseness. Generally, laryngitis is a temporary nuisance and natural remedies give instant relief. However, if the condition persists, medical help should be sought. Read on to find out some of the best remedies for getting relief from laryngitis.

Remedies For Laryngitis

Home Remedies
  • Gargling is one of the easiest and most effective home remedies. Salt water gargling with half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water several times a day helps to kill the infections. Similarly, gargling can also be done with antiseptic/antibacterial mouthwash or a vinegar solution in water.
  • Relaxing the larynx is very important for the inflammation to subside. Thus, shouting and whispering should be avoided. Both these activities put strain on the vocal cords.
  • Steam inhalation is also very effective in treating laryngitis. Taking warm water in a bowl and inhaling the steam gives relief to the vocal cords.
  • Plenty of garlic and ginger should be put in food as both of them have strong anti-microbial properties.
  • Hot ginger or lemon tea sweetened with honey does wonders for the throat. Honey is naturally antibacterial and can be mixed with any hot beverage.
  • Staying hydrated is important to reduce the duration of laryngitis. At least eight glasses of water should be taken every day.
  • If the air is too dry, then it creates irritation in the throat. Thus, a humidifier should be used to maintain the recommended humidity in a room.
  • Constant clearing of throat and coughing should be avoided as that tends to aggravate the inflammation.
  • Smoking should be avoided along with beverages, which dry the throat, like coffee and alcohol.
  • Fatty and oily food should be avoided as they cause irritation to the throat.
  • Sucking on lozenges regularly throughout the day helps to moisten the throat and reduce irritation.

Medication
  • If laryngitis is due to GERD, medication from the classes of drugs such H2 receptor antagonists, proton pump inhibitors, and prokinetics are used.
  • If the hoarseness is due to cold or other bacterial or fungal infections, a course of antibiotics or anti-fungal medication may be prescribed.
  • In case of chronic laryngitis due to formation of vocal cord nodules, a surgical procedure along with speech therapy may be recommended.
