  • Clean the area and make it free of dust and dirt.
  • In case you find any imperfections on the hardwood, sand them with medium-grained sandpaper.
  • Remove the stair nosing and replace it with a new one. To figure out the depth of the nosing, you need to measure in three places on the underside of the stair tread.
  • After measuring the distance on the top of the nosing, mark a straight line from one end of the stair tread to the other.
  • Now, it is the time to cut the hardwood, with the help of a circular saw.
  • If the stair risers need a wooden finish, sand and paint them.
  • If the risers are stained, you will have to install new wood for them. For the purpose, measure the risers one by one.
  • Make use of finishing nails to install the wood for the risers.
  • Ensure that the wooden boards are secured in the bottom as well as top of each riser. Nail the boards down, so that they remain fixed.

  • Using adhesive, install the hardwood required for the stair treads.
  • Repeat the above step, until you reach the top of your staircase.
