The year was 1771, when Morton Brunnich a Danish naturalist was exploring the beaches of Norway, when he stumbled upon something he could not in any sense identify with. It surely was a fish as it had been washed ashore to its death. But it was of mammoth size and had alien looking features, the kind that had never been sighted before. This was the first account of what is known as an oarfish or more popularly the “sea monster”. It was 15 meters in size and had queer protrusions from its oddly shaped head. Till today this strange sea tale ignites fear in many people about the “sea monster”. There are various tales, movies and beliefs that create fear in people to venture out into the sea. The long standing mystery of the Bermuda triangle still keeps people at bay from adding that part of the North Atlantic Ocean in their travel routes. The fear of the sea or thalassophobia is similar but should not be mistaken for the fear of water or Hydrophobia. It is classified as a specific phobia where people have an irrational, constant and intense fear of the sea. Panic is triggered by a single, specific brain wave and some of the symptoms usually involves increase heart beat rate, nausea, increased sweating, losing control with the fear of dying or an extreme anxiety attack. Some of the treatments available to overcome the fear of the sea are mentioned ahead.
Ways To Overcome Fear Of Sea
- Behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other kinds of therapies can be used to deal with the fear of the sea. These techniques broadly use beliefs, behavioral patterns and thought processes or cognitions, to identify and positively impact negative emotions related to irrational judgment of an event.
- A more reliable and faster technique for people who have a fear of the sea can try hypnotherapy. In general terms, this method involves reprogramming of the subconscious mind that contains irrational fears. This immensely reduces the cause of fear to the lowest level. However, not many people are comfortable with giving complete control to an outsider to ‘reformat’ something like the mind that is personal and internal.
- Another quick and effective method is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). From the standpoint of the NLP practice, any phobia is basically a self created program that malfunctions. The study of the ways in which we create our own reality found in NLP, provides ways to identify and reprogram an individual’s ‘malfunctioning program’.
- A form of therapy that has been strongly effective and long lasting in eliminating phobias for years is Energy Psychology. This method is similar to that of acupuncture except there are no needles involved. Instead acupuncture of emotions without needles is practiced. This technique is known to have quick and positive effect on behavior patterns and thought process. It also develops techniques and skills that could be of use in various situations in the future. Scientific research has recommended this as one of the best treatments for phobias and fears.
