For making taffy, you need to make a concoction of boiled sugar for flavoring, buttering and finally coloring. The procedure does not end here, as the taffy is then wrapped in wax paper. Though this might seem like a difficult task at hand, the entire process is quite fun and the smell of the ingredients make your mouth go watery. Ingredients
  • 3 drops Food Coloring
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • ¼ to 1 tsp Flavoring (vanilla, maple, lemon, or mint)
  • 2 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Light Corn Syrup
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 2 tspGlycerin
  • ¾ cup Water
Things Required
  • Large Saucepan
  • Waxed Paper or Plastic Wrap
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Greased Scissors or Butter Knife
  • Candy Thermometer
  • Marble Slab or Cookie Sheet
  • Pastry Brush
Method
  • Take a large sauce pan. Mix sugar and cornstarch in it. Now slowly add some water, corn syrup, butter, glycerin and salt. Stir all the content in the saucepan with the wooden spatula.
  • To dissolve the sugar, put the saucepan on the medium heat and continue stirring.
  • When the content comes to boiling, stop stirring. Let all the ingredients cook until the temperature reaches 270 degrees F. Check this temperature with the help of the thermometer.
  • At 270 degrees F, the bubbles on the top of the syrup will be smaller, thicker and closer. Now paint the walls of the saucepan with warm water, using pastry brush.
  • Now take the saucepan off the heat and stir in the flavoring.
  • At the same time, add food coloring also.
  • Pour this syrup into shallow, greased sheet or slab to cool it.
  • Once the taffy becomes cold, oil your hands with oil or butter.
  • Stretch the taffy until it becomes lighter in color and gains a satiny shine. It usually needs to be done for about 10 minutes.
  • Now roll the taffy into a long rope and about ½ inch wide.
  • Now use a greased scissor or butter knife to chop the taffy into small pieces.
  • Keep it for half an hour and then wrap all the pieces in wax paper. Twist the ends of wax paper to close the ends. 
In Microwave
 
Ingredients
  • 3 drops Food Coloring
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 cup Light Corn Syrup
  • 2 Cups Sugar
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Candy Thermometer
  • Kitchen Shears
  • Wax paper or Plastic Wrap
  • Liquid Flavorings (optional)
Things Required
  • Casserole Dish (microwave safe)
  • Jelly Roll Pan
Method
  • Take a jelly roll pan and mix sugar, corn syrup and 1 cup of hot water in it.
  • Pour this mixture in the microwave safe casserole. Butter the jellyroll pan and keep it aside.
  •  Put the casserole in the microwave and run for around 8 minutes until the content starts boiling.
  • Take out the hot mixture and stir it.
  • After stirring it nicely, put it back in the microwave and again set the microwave on high.
  • With the candy thermometer keep on checking the temperature of the mixture while cooking it. It takes about 15- 20 minutes.
  • When the temperature reaches 260 degrees F, take the container out of the microwave and wait for the bubbling to stop.
  • Add desired shade of food coloring. Stir the entire mixture nicely.
  • Pour the mixture in the buttered jelly roll pan and put it aside for five minutes.
  • Run some butter on your hands and take the taffy to pull it back and forth. Pull it until it becomes ½ inch strand of candy. 
  • Cut into desired shape and wrap them into wax paper.
