Giving A Foot Massage
- Put some drops of your favorite essential oil or bath salts in warm water. Peppermint or lavender oil is favored by many. Soak your feet in warm water, for about 10 minutes.
- Make sure that the feet are completely dry before the massage begins. You can use a towel for the purpose.
- Apply a moderate amount of cream or oil on your hands and make sure that your hands are warm enough to avoid discomfort. Mineral oil is not absorbed by the skin, and it can be wiped off easily.
- Begin by stroking the top of foot, between cords located on top of foot at instep. Move from the toe to the ankle. Then, continue by stroking the sole of the foot, first gently and then gradually increasing the pressure.
- Massage the sole of the foot in circular motions, and apply more pressure to areas such as the heel or ball of the foot. Start from the top and work your way down. Take care not overlook the sides of the foot.
- Hold the foot with one hand, use the other hand to rotate the foot, first at the ankle, and then near the ball of the foot. Be gentle. Repeat the technique, at least five times, in each direction.
- Massage the sole by holding the foot with one hand and making a fist with the other, using moderate pressure on the sole.
- Begin with the big toe and work towards the smallest toe, taking each toe separately. Roll the toe between your thumb and forefinger as you slide your fingers down the toe to the end, applying mild pressure. Gently knead the end of each toe.
- Take your index finger and slide it between each toe about five times. Use your thumb and fingers to make the circular motions over the sole once again. End by stroking the sole and instep. This completes the massage.
- Wipe off any excess cream or oil with a soft towel. Make the person thick socks, to retain moisturizing. In summers, let him/her get into his/her slippers. It is also advisable to drink plenty of water after the massage.
Tips
Take care not to apply too much pressure, to avoid discomfort to the one who is receiving the massage. Also, remember not to use too much cream or oil, it can make your hands too slippery.
