Renowned for its speed, endurance and loud voice in the field, English coonhound is a good locator of game. Also known as American English coonhound and Redtick coonhound, this breed makes an excellent family pet and is wonderful with children. A balanced and powerful dog, the Redtick coonhound possesses the grace and attitude of a well-conditioned athlete. It is generally a good natured and very sociable dog. English coonhound is a descendent of the English foxhound, just like all other coonhound breeds. It originated in the Southeastern United States, where it was crossbred from American and English foxhounds, other European hunting breeds and native dogs. The first English Coonhound was registered by United Kennel Club in 1905, under the name of English Fox & Coonhound. The breed was mainly used for hunting. In 1940, the six coonhounds were recognized as distinct breeds, which also led to the pairing of English Coonhound classification.
Redtick coonhound is a medium to large sized dog, with a strong, well-proportioned, muscular build. The broad head has a square shaped muzzle that is in proportion to the skull. The dog has a deep chest and a black nose. It has a moderately long, high-set tail. The hard, short-haired coat can be found in various colors of blue and white ticked, red and white ticked, tri-colored with ticking, red and white, and white and black.
English coonhound is a pleasant, alert, energetic, lively and confident dog. Intelligent and active, this dog is always eager to please its owners. It makes a good companion since it is very devoted to its family. The breed has a great hearing and smelling sense, which makes it an excellent hunter. English coonhound blends beautifully with older, considerate children, but can do well with younger kids as well. The dog is not recommended for apartment life. It is active outdoors and makes a fine guardian to its family and home. English coonhound requires extensive exercise and can easily accompany you on daily, long, brisk walks or jogs. Due to lack of exercise, it tends to become high strung or destructive, so make sure you provide it with lots of the same.
No health issues or concerns have been recorded for the English coonhound till date. In other words, it is quite a healthy dog.
The coat of Redtick coonhound is easy to care for and does not need much grooming. The short, hard coat should be brushed using a firm bristle brush. The dog should be bathed only when necessary.
