Ingredients 

For Crust

  • 1¼ cup All-Purpose Flour
  • ¾ cup Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
  • ¼ cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ tsp Salt (optional)
  • 1 stick Margarine or Butter (melted)
  • 1 tbsp Water
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
For Filling
  • 8 oz. Sour Cream (reduced fat or regular)
  • 2/3 cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 4 Egg Whites or 2 Full Eggs (lightly beaten)
  • ½ tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp Ground Nutmeg
  • 4 - 5 medium Apples (peeled and thinly sliced)
For Topping
  • ¼ cup Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
  • ¼ cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ cup All-Purpose Flour
  • ½ stick Margarine or Butter (chilled and finely chopped)
Method
  • Preheat the oven at 375°F.
  • For preparing the crust, mix flour, oats, sugar and salt in a bowl. Now stir in margarine, water and vanilla and mix well.
  • Take a 9-inch pie plate and press the mixture firmly onto it. Make sure you form a ¼ inch thick rim around edge. Bake this setup for 12-15 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely on wire rack.
  • For filling, combine sour cream, sugar, flour, egg whites, cinnamon and nutmeg in medium bowl; mix well. Add apples; mix well. Spoon this mixture into cooled crust.
  • For topping, combine all ingredients except butter and mix well. Stir in the chopped margarine until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle over the filling.
  • Now, bake the dish for 50-60 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean.
  • Cool well on wire rack and serve either warm or chilled.
  • Store tightly covered in refrigerator.
Apple Custard Pie With Lemon Zest
 
Ingredients
  • 8 oz. Unsalted Butter (melted)
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 Lemon Zest
  • ½ pound Apples (peeled, cored and coarsely grated)
  • 5 Large Eggs (lightly beaten)
  • 1 thawed sheet Puff Pastry (½ 1-pound box)
  • ½ cup Milk or Cream
Preparation
  • Preheat oven to 350oF degrees.
  • Beat sugar with melted butter. Stir in apples and lemon zest and mix thoroughly. Add beaten eggs to the mixture and blend well. 
  • Take a 10-inch deep-dish pie pan and line it with the puff pastry trimming off excess. Pour batter onto pan and place on a baking sheet. Brush the sides of puff pastry with either milk or cream and bake for about 30 minutes or until the surface of pie is lightly browned.
  • Your apple custard pie with lemon zest is ready to be served.
