Recycled Sand Art Bottles

Decorative sand art bottles are a great way to preserve a bit of beach sand, thereby creating ever-lasting memory of your pleasurable holiday. Sand art is an exciting practice of layering colored sand into glass jars giving an ornate, detailed and distinctive appearance. These sand art bottles, easily available as beach souvenirs and interesting ornaments at the seaside stores, are highly expensive, which is one reason as to why they are rarely bought. As such, it is advised to indulge into the activity of making some creative patterned sand art bottles at home. You can either buy colored sand readily available in the market or color them at home using assorted food colorings. To avoid the rustic and native look that sand reflects, choose colors that appeal you or coordinate with your home décor. When done correctly, these recycled sand art bottles can add a glimmering touch to the decorating scheme of your home. How To Make Sand Art From Recycled Bottles

Things Required
  • Quart-size Plastic Zipper Bags
  • Fine Sand
  • Glass Bottles (with labels removed)
  • Liquid Food Coloring
  • Paper Plates
  • Funnel
  • Chopstick
  • Super Glue
  • Ribbon (1/4-inch or 3/8-inch)
  • Scissors
How To Make
  • Fill a plastic bag with sand, about half full, for each color of sand you wish to create.
  • Add 2 to 3 drops of food coloring over the sand into each plastic bag.
  • Squeeze out all the moisture from the bag and zip it sealed.
  • Using your hands, knead the sand from outside the bag to blend the color all throughout the sand.
  • If you desire to get a richer/deeper color, add more food coloring. But make sure that you do not add too much of color; else the sand might get saturated.
  • Pour out each sand color onto a separate paper plate.
  • Place the funnel onto the mouth of the glass bottle.
  • Start pouring sand from paper plate with the color you want to use as the bottom layer.
  • Fill the funnel with one inch of sand and gradually let it fall onto the base of the jar. Use a chopstick, if you wish so.
  • Continue the process with adding additional layers of different colored sand to create different designs.
  • If you want to make diagonal strips, tilt the bottle at an angle and tap it lightly to rest the sand at one corner.
  • Holding the bottle at this angle, add the next layer of sand so that it is directed towards the empty corner of the bottle.
  • Continue to fill the glass bottle with assorted layers of sand till you reach the top of the bottle.
  • Then, apply a layer of super glue around the threads of the bottle neck and place the cap to secure it.
  • Cut an 8-inch ribbon of the color that perfectly complements the sand colors.
  • Tie the ribbon around the bottle neck and your sand art bottle is ready to be displayed.
  • Do not shake the bottle; else you will destroy the colored layers you have created.
