Laser Treatments for Acne
Microdermabrasion
This treatment improves the overall skin tone and luster. It is beneficial for superficial mild acne scars. It works best if the patient gets a series of at least 6 peels, once every 1-2 weeks. In this process, very fine aluminum crystals are used to create a microdermabrasion effect on the skin. Usually, the face is the most common area but, other sun damaged areas such as the neck, chest, arms and hands can also be treated with the help of this process. The effects produced are more pronounced than glycolic acid peels. It should be used for patients who do not require laser skin resurfacing or who do not want to deal with the longer healing time.
Photorejuvenation
Photorejuvenation is yet another laser acne treatment. In this treatment, a laser or broadband visible light is used to treat the patient. Usually the treatment stretches to include 5-6 treatments, performed every 3-4 weeks. This also improves mild acne scarring, by causing the formation of new collagen.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
This technique employs a combination of laser carbon dioxide (CO2), and/or Erbium:YAG laser. In this treatment, the skin is removed layer by layer, thereby getting rid of the uppermost portion. Moreover, the heat produced by the laser tightens the skin, which smoothes the scars. However, laser skin resurfacing results are not visible before 18 months. During this time, the skin and its collagen, remodel and smooth out the acne and its scars.
