How to Make a Prom Dress
  • Buy a cloth pattern in your size. Many patterns available in the market come with sewing instructions that can be easily followed by the tailors.
  • Buy material for your dress. For information, sewing is not the difficult part of making a prom dress, rather dealing with the unique characteristics of the special fabric is.
  • Pay attention to the fabric recommendations on the pattern envelope. Some fabrics are suited well for certain particular dresses and the pattern envelope usually states this.
  • Take care of your material as some of the fabrics, like satin, lace, silk and velvet, are either dry-clean only or have other special care instructions. This will help you manage difficult-to-handle fabrics and take good care of them.
  • Purchase the recommended yardage and about a half yard extra. Patterns usually allow plenty of material, but it's always nice to have a little extra, just in case you cut a piece wrong the first time. Even if little extra material is left, you can always use it to make a matching purse, scarf or similar items.
  • Purchase all necessary items, such as hooks, eyes, zippers, buttons, lace, hemming lace, interfacing, etc. beforehand. Usually all the patterns contain a list of the items needed.
  • Wash your material according to the instructions written on the pattern.
  • Read the instructions thoroughly and cut out the pattern pieces according to your need.
  • Lay out the cloth on a smooth clean surface.
  • Pay attention to the cutting recommendations given in the pattern, in order to make the dress you have intended.
  • If you do not have a table large enough to spread the material, you can use a clean floor or a cutting board. Folded cardboard sheet, with inch markings, can also be used for stitching.
  • Pin your pattern piece carefully in place.
  • Deft fully cut out the pieces, following the pattern, such as darts, etc.
  • Sew according to the instructions given in the pattern.
  • Iron your dress and wear to the prom.
