Kate Winslet is an English actress, who has earned various nominations and awards to her name. She has always been honored, more so, because she broke the record for the youngest person to get two Oscar nominations at the mere age of 22. With her each performance and subsequent nomination, she further broke the record and became the youngest person to receive three, four, and five nominations. Throughout her career, Winslet is celebrated for having played a variety of different characters. Childhood
Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975 in Reading, Berkshire, England to Roger John Winslet and Sally Ann Bridges. Her father was swimming-pool contractor and her mother was a barmaid, though both of them shared a common interest of acting. She had two sisters-Beth Winslet and Anna Winslet, who were also into the same profession of acting. Raised as an Anglican, Winslet started studying drama at 11 at the Redroofs Theatre School, Berkshire. Here she soon became the head girl and was cast as a spokesperson for a cereal in television commercials.
Career-Acting
In 1991, she started her career on television by co-starring in Dark Season, a children’s science fiction serial on the BBC. Subsequently, she appeared in the made-for-TV movie ‘Anglo-Saxon Attitudes’ in 1992. Then once again for the BBC, she did an episode of the medical drama ‘Casualty’ (1993). In the year 1994, her film career took flight with appreciation when she starred in ‘Heavenly Creatures’ as Juliet Hulme to play the role of an imaginative teen. Another successful movie ‘Sense and Sensibility’ made her famous all over, particularly in the UK.
As soon as the Titanic was out in 1997, Winslet became a prominent actress world-wide. The movie was an enormous hit at the box-office which further went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Winslet, with her single track ‘What If’, has also taken pleasure briefly in singing. This song from ‘Christmas Carol: The Movie’ became No. 1 in Ireland and No. 6 in the UK. In 2006, she has also sung in a duet with Weird Al Yankovic on the Sandra Boynton CD Dog Train in the film ‘Romance and Cigarettes’. She also sang ‘Sono andati’ for Heavenly Creatures that featured on the film’s soundtrack.
Personal Life
Winslet tied the nuptial knot with director, Jim Threapleton, on 22 Nov’ 1998. On 12 Oct’ 2000, she gave birth to a daughter, Mia Honey. After her divorce in 2001, she started a relationship with Sam Mendes. She married him on 24 May’ 2003 on the island of Anguilla in the Caribbean. On 22 Dec’ 2003, a baby-boy Joe Alfie was born to her. Over the years, the media have actively documented her weight fluctuations, but she has been candid about her denial to lose weight. Presently, she resides with her husband in New York City.
