Directions To Repair

Correct Repair Kit
Before you begin with repairing your leather furniture, it is important to ensure that you have the right kit that matches your furniture. Most furniture is made from top coated or protected leather to lengthen its life. Check the tools in the kit that will be required to remove this leather.

Assess Damage
Check out the severity of the damage caused to the furniture. In case the damage is extensive, it needs to be replaced by a leather swatch. However, if it is a tear or minor damage, the furniture can be rectified by using the filler. In case the piece has to be replaced, check below the furniture piece in case the manufacturer has attached a spare piece of the same leather that the furniture is made from.

Prepare the Surface
Clean and remove the coating around the repairing site using a solvent contained in the kit. In case the kit does not contain a solvent, use some fine sandpaper to gently rub the surface and clean dirt and coating. Then, rub the surface with rubbing alcohol. If the edges are curling out, cut the leather to neatly repair it.

Insert Backing
Place the canvas backing patch below the damaged leather with the help of tweezers. Now, firmly push the patch beneath, by holding it with tweezers at one end and pushing the rest, to keep it flat. In case the patch is too large, cut it to the size of the hole with the help of a pair of sharp scissors. Apply a thin layer of the adhesive, using a palette knife, to the underside of the leather and push it firmly against the canvas patch. Allow it to dry.

Fill or Patch
For repairing minor damages in the leather, filler can be used to rectify it. Apply a thin layer of the filler with a palette knife to the leather and allow it to dry. Apply continuous layers of the filler, until the hole is leveled with the rest of the leather. In case the damage requires a patch, apply a small amount of adhesive to the outer edge and stick it to the canvas. Make sure to fit the patch into the leather as tightly as possible. Thereafter, fill the edges with the filler, ensuring not to overfill it.

Finalize
Dab the colorant on the leather as a base coat. Once the colorant dries off, apply several coats of the color coat to seal and protect the repaired leather. Apply thin coats and allow the color coat to dry after each application.
