How to Make Colored Icing
  • Put the icing in a bowl.
  • Take a toothpick and dip it into the color.
  • Swirl the toothpick in the white icing.
  • Wait and check out the color that the frosting has attained.
  • If it’s the one you want, stop right there.
  • If the color is lighter than what you desire, add more color.
  • Make sure to add a little color at a time.
  • Each time you add more color, use a new toothpick.
  • After you have attained the desired color, blend the icing with a spatula.
  • Your colored icing is ready to be used!
Tips
  • Always start with white icing. Non-white frosting should be used only when you want the cake to be either dark brown or black.
  • Select frosting color with care. It should not affect the consistency of the frosting.
  • Typical food coloring can thin down icing, making it difficult to work with. So, it is better to avoid it.
  • If you are using butter cream for frosting, remember that the colors put in it will darken after a few hours.
  • Royal icing always requires more color than butter cream, to get the same shade of frosting.
  • Always prepare more colored frosting than the amount you think would be used. This is because it is difficult to get the same shade two times.
