Growing Bamboo Plant Indoors
Supplies Needed
- Bamboo Chutes
- Transparent Jar, Flower Pot or Glass
- Stones, Pebbles or Marbles
- Water
Instructions
- In order to grow a bamboo plant inside your house, you will first need to buy a healthy bamboo chute from the local nursery. Before getting it home, make sure that the leaves as well as the stem are strong and of a shade of light green, but neither yellow nor dark green.
- Next, you will need to choose a container for the bamboo plant. It is advisable to go for a transparent jar, flower pot or glass, through which the plant shows. This will allow you to see the roots as well as the pebbles that you will add later on.
- While choosing the container for your bamboo plant, make sure to get one of appropriate size. Remember, bamboo grows better in a large container. Since the plant is known to grow quickly, it is better to ensure that there are two inches between the edge of the root and side of the container.
- Place the bamboo shoot in the container and add stones, pebbles or marbles to the bottom, in a way that it gets completely covered. While doing this, you need to make sure to add stones around the stem of the plant, to keep it balanced and prevent its roots from getting flattened.
- In the next step, you will have to add water to the container. In this context, make sure that 2-3 inches of the stem remain submerged in water. This will ensure that the bamboo remains healthy and grows well. Remember to refill the container as and when the water level goes down.
- Now, you will have to choose the perfect location for your bamboo plant. Keep in mind the fact that the plant requires indirect light, as direct sun can make its leaves burn. However, at the same time, deficient light can make its leaves lose strength. The best bet would be to use an energy efficient bulb.
- While selecting the location for your bamboo plant, you also need to remember that the particular area has lots of air movement. In other words, the plant should get fresh air from outdoors. At the same time, the temperature should neither be hot, nor cold. 15 to 25oC will be perfect.
Maintenance Tips
- Humid conditions are best for the growth of bamboo plant. So, you need to ensure that its moisture levels remain high at all times. The best way to do this is by spraying water on the plant on a regular basis and keeping it at a cool place.
- It is not necessary to water the bamboo plant on a daily basis. This needs to be done only if the leaves start to curl. However, the water that you use for bamboo should not contain chlorine, as it makes the leaves of the plant turn yellow.
- The roots of the bamboo plant, the container in which it is kept as well as the stones used to support it, need to be cleaned from time to time. For the purpose, take out the roots first and wash them with water. Then, wash the container with detergent and rinse the stones as well. Reassemble everything inside the container and add fresh water.
