Tips To Choose Plants To Grow In A Garden

The type of plants to choose depends on the type of gardens.

Gardens With Shade: For gardens with huge trees or with the house itself providing the shade, it is better to choose plants, which thrive in shade. However, there can be moist shade and dry shade. In moist shade, plants like ferns and hostas can be grown while in dry shade sword ferns and periwinkles can be grown.

Sunny Gardens: These gardens require a constant supply of water. The choice of plants in sunny gardens is more. These types of plants are more colorful and require direct sunlight and plenty of water. While choosing plants for the sunny garden it must be considered that different plants require different degree of sunlight. Some need sun in the morning while some require sun most of the day and there are some plants, which require equal amount of sun and shade.

Climate: Local plants are easy to grow. Select those plants, which grow in the climatic condition in which your garden is. For exotic plants, you need to construct a proper green house. Plants, which find the climate suitable, grow with little maintenance and remain healthy. Plants, especially flowering plants are very sensitive to climatic conditions and if the climate is not proper, then the flowers would wilt or never bloom.

Soil: Test the type of soil you have in your garden. Certain plants thrive in certain soil conditions. Soil can be improved with composting so that a wide range of plants can be grown. Using soil testing kits find out the acidic and alkaline condition of the soil. Adding of lime decreases the acidity and adding of sulphur decreases the alkaline condition. You can also select plants, which thrive on acidic or alkaline soil.

Water:  The availability of water is of utmost importance and plants must be chosen according to the amount of water available. If there is a dearth of water then plants, which grow in dry conditions, must be planted and vice versa.
