How To Build A Flower Bed

A flower bed is a delight to watch. In a small area, you can have an assortment of flowers, making the place look extremely colorful and vibrant. However, building a flower bed requires proper planning. Firstly, you need to ensure that the place has a proper drainage system and the soil has plenty of nutrients. Then, you also need to prevent disease and pests by taking effective precautionary measures before installing the plant seeds. In the following lines, we give you ideas on how to build a flower bed.

Building Flower Beds
  • The first step would be to make a rough sketch of the flower bed. Choose the spot where you want the flower bed to be. Visualize the various plants you want to have on your flower bed and the place where they would go.
  • Make a plan for the flower bed. It is generally known that the tall plants should be placed at the back of the bed, near the fence, while plants that require frequent attention, like pruning, grooming or spraying, must be situated at the front. This will make it easier for you to maintain them.
  • It is important to outline the boundary of the flower bed. You can use household flour for the purpose. You can remove the flour lines later on, by brushing them.
  • Using a trowel or small shovel, dig the area where you have made lines, with the help of flour. Dig the soil at least 8 to 10 inches deep. However, in case you are planting perennials, dig up to 24 inches.
  • Check the soil before planting the plants. You can either do it by yourself, using a home kit or take the help from a local nursery.
  • Take proper amendments before planting the plants. Spray the area with a nonselective herbicide. Mow the area or dig it and let the herbicide set for at least two to three days. This would help the seeds germinate well.
  • Layer the area with 3 to 4 inches of compost and other soil amendments.
  • Look for any chunks of sod or tufts of grass on the surface of the bed. If there are any, pluck them out.
  • Now is the time to sow the flower seeds.
  • Using a ground rake, rake the area to get a smooth surface. Now, wait for the plants to grow from the seeds, making sure to water them regularly.
  • If you want a neat overall look, install edging. This will help keep out the grass as well as other weeds.
