What comes to mind when I say “Indian Wedding”? Loud colors, shimmery fabrics, flowing lehengas, heavy embroidery and stone work, all having a typical traditional touch on them! The traditional mindset moved from saris to lehengas and now it is slowly but rapidly shifting towards a new trend. This can be called a western influence and the impact of globalization, which has resulted in increased awareness about the latest in fashion. When it comes to looking good on the wedding day, not even the religion can be a boundary. What was usually seen in Christian weddings, is now seen in Hindu weddings too.
These days, many progressive brides are choosing the sophisticated and chic look over the traditional outfit. The wedding gowns have made a thumping entry into the bridal trousseau in India. The flowing lehenga was tapered down to make the bride look like a mermaid and now, it has taken the form of a chic gown. Though not really worn during the wedding rituals, brides choose to wear a gown during the reception or the cocktail party, hosted by many these days.
Which Color do You Want?
White is predominantly the color that is chosen, though there are shades like creamy white, off white, ivory that are popular too. Since white is considered inauspicious in Hindu weddings, it is opted for the reception, after the wedding rituals have taken place. The gowns usually have elaborate designs and patterns embroidered on them. The color for embroidery is usually maroon or a metallic sheen such as silver or gold. Top it off with Swarovski crystals and you have a winner!
What’s in a Name?
Since it is a new concept in the big fat Indian wedding, famous Indian designers are coming up with gorgeous designs under their brand names. Not just Indian designers, seeing the potential in the Indian market, international brand names like Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Versace have opened their stores in India. Though this phenomenon is not seen much in the middle class, the upper and elite classes are definitely shelling out money for looking good. In the end, all that matters is that you leave no stone unturned for your wedding and go for a wedding gown if you feel it will make you look no less than a princess!
