Safely Sharing The Bed With Your Infant

  • Discuss with your partner, the concept of your baby sharing the bed with both of you. If he is not enthusiastic about the same, try to convince him about it or it may create a problem between the two of you. At the same time, decide how long you want to share the bed with the baby and stick to the decision.
  • Adult beds are not made for the babies, so while getting your baby to sleep there; you need to make it safer for your baby. If there are any gaps between the bed and the wall, eliminate them, as the baby may get stuck in there.
  • If the bed is too small, add a side bed to it. You can even add the crib in your bed. Never co-sleep on a recliner or a couch, because a baby can easily suffocate on the wedges.
  • Don’t share your bed with the baby, if you or your partner smokes. It may prove hazardous to your baby. In addition, alcohol should never be taken, if your baby sleeps with you. It will reduce your alertness and you may not wake up when your baby needs you.
  • Replace the sagging mattress or waterbeds, if any, with a firm and flat mattress. Along with that, do get rid of oversized pillows and quilts. The baby may end up choking in them.
  • If your baby rolls in sleep, make sure the bed is large enough, so that he/she doesn’t fall out of it. If it is small, it is advisable to install guardrail for your baby’s safety.
  • When you are sleeping with your baby, don’t over dress him/her, as your body heat is enough to warm him/her up. At the same time, don’t make the room stuffy and extremely hot.
  • Never leave the baby alone in the bed and don’t cover his/her face with coverlets. Along with that, make sure that baby is placed high enough not to slip inside the coverlet and get trapped therein.
  • Make sure the baby sleeps on his back. Instead of placing him/her between you and your partner, put him/her on a side. It reduces the risk of his/her slipping under the bedding. Also, keep the baby away from the pillows.
