How To Improve Your Posture

A good posture is not just required to make you look tall and handsome, but also to prevent muscular pain, promote the right alignment of your joints and significantly reduce the risk of arthritis. Right posture also makes you feel more confident about your own self. Sagging or dropping shoulders and a slouching body make you appear a lot many years older than your age. However, very few of us may be having the right posture and there is always a scope for improvement, even in those exceptional cases. In case you want to know how to improve your posture, follow the article.

Tips For Improving Your Posture
  • Everyday, for the first ten minutes, work on preparing yourself to follow a good posture. Stand with your back placed against the wall. Bring your body in a straight line, tall line. It will help you maintain the right posture throughout the day.
  • Yoga or Pilates is also a good option, as both of them put great focus on posturing. The spine lengthening and stretching exercises that are a part of Yoga and Pilates work well to improve your posture as well.
  • Those who spend a good part of their day working on computers and remain seated on a chair would do well to get themselves a supportive chair. It should be comfortable and supportive of your body size as well as lower back. When you have to keep sitting for long hours, sitting in the right posture becomes very important.
  • Since muscles do not like to be fixated in the same position for long hours, get up and move after every hour, when in office. Move away from your work desk for a short span of time and walk till a point. Then, come back and resume work.
  • Stretch and strengthen your shoulders, as your shoulder and upper back muscles are crucial in determining your posture. Do exercises that are helpful in strengthening your shoulders, not just toning the arms.
  • In order to stand straight and improve your posture, practice aligning your spine. Stand up straight, with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your lower back straight by tucking your pelvis under, so that there is no pressure on the lower back. Now, concentrate on your vertebrae. Move your back in a relaxed way, even as you straighten your back slowly. Once your spine is aligned, hold the position for as long as you can. Initially, you may not be able to hold it for a longer time, but gradually the time limit will increase.
Sleeping Posture
Our sleeping posture also has a significant bearing on our body posture, while standing or sitting. Therefore, giving yourself a firm back support while sleeping is very important. For a proper sleeping posture, take note of the following points:
  • Use a fluffy pillow to provide support to your head and shoulders and a proper alignment to your body.
  • Try to sleep on your side or back, rather than on your stomach.
  • For more support, use a rolled-up towel under your neck and pillow under your knees.
  • When you get up in the morning, don’t lift your weight with your back. Use your arms and legs to lift yourself up.
