Commonly Misspelled Words

Spelling is a fundamental aspect of any language, very much like pronunciation. While proper pronunciation shows the extent of your education, proper spelling shows the depth of your knowledge. Spelling is such an inherent part of the written world that extreme pains are taken not to misspell words. Correct spellings are crammed into a kid's brain, right from the time he/she enters pre-school. But with millions of words existing, it will take more than a lifetime to learn how to correctly spell each and every word of the English language. After the school years, students lose their grip over the language, as it is not emphasized on much. So, when they step into their work years, they have only a hazy notion of whether to put the i’s before the e’s or after it. Using apostrophe, punctuation marks and grammatically correct words turn out to be mysterious riddles that are far from being solved!

 

The spelling disaster can be partly blamed on technology and partly on the unwillingness of people to write the correct word. With SMS becoming the chosen form of written communication, words have been squeezed to their bare essentials. Some instances of them being ‘you’ becoming ‘u’, ‘are’ becoming ‘r’, ‘the’ changing to ‘d’ and medicine becoming ‘medc’. Naturally, as correct spellings were considered too long and pricey, since using them meant longer messages and higher charges. As if this was less traumatic, English suffered another major blow with the birth of ‘auto-dictionary’. As such, whenever the correct spelling was required, the software came to the rescue. Needless to say, few people raked their brains henceforth for the correct spelling, preferring to activate the software instead.

 

Thus, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that if writing on paper yet again becomes the talk of the town any time in future, English would have a never-seen-before appearance, what with horrendous grammar, vowels at the wrong places and not a word or a sentence straight! This rightly explains as to why many people today are reluctant to use the pen, instead of the keyboard. Misspelling, which started to satiate the whims and fancies of the rebellious, has, sadly, become a rule, rather than the exception. However, know that no knowledge is any time better than wrong knowledge. Start a motion and revive the glory of English by getting your spellings correct.
