They may try to make up a story out of it. If you are busy with your work for long hours without even chatting to your close friends in the office, there is a possibility for the official gossiper in your office to take over the charge and make a story out of your workaholism.

They may find umpteen number of reason for you never trying to interact with them, which you may have never even imagined. You can avoid these problems if you take a little time to greet people with a smiling face. Don’t try to force a smile on your face. Let it come from your heart when you greet somebody. You can try to set aside ten to fifteen minute’s time to chat with your colleagues. In this time, try not to indulge in talks about work. This may clear many misunderstandings which could happen because of your gradual act of introversion.

Face The Villain
If you are the centre of attraction in your office, it is natural that you may have enemies. There may be a group of people who are jealous of your achievements. Your image may become the ‘punching bag’ of the office rumors. You should maintain some friends who can fish some of these gossips for you. By this way, you can easily find out the sources of the gossips which may make serious damage to your reputation and credibility.

Once you have all evidence about the source of the rumor, you should meet Mr. or Ms. Gossiper/s face to face. The first thing you should understand when meeting a ‘gossiper’ is that you shouldn’t loose your control even for one minute. Such people can exploit your emotional outburst and make you a ‘villain’ in front of other people. Majority of people never try to observe what the facts are or what harm that person has done to you. They are there to judge and throw one more person out of the camp when given a chance accidentally. Behave properly with those who have made malicious comments about you. Be politely, but tell them firmly that they shouldn’t overstep the line again. They may claim that it’s just a misunderstanding, which is not the fact but you can give them another chance to correct their mistake. You should never use obscene language and never show that you are angry. They may change if they realise their mistake by seeing your polite behavior.

Approach Higher Authorities
Even after all this, if you find that such people are continuing with their earlier activities you should take up the matter with your boss. Seek a prior appointment with your boss to discuss the issue. Present the evidence that you have against them in a calm and professional manner and ask him/her to take action to stop this distressing behavior.
