Diabetes Risk Factors

More and more people are getting affected by diabetes in India. People usually think that they are fine and don’t care to get themselves checked. Diabetes can occur in anyone, but obese and old people are more prone to it. Risk factors for diabetes include the following:
  • Any parent, or sibling having diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Age more than 45 years
  • Gestational diabetes while delivering a baby weighing over 9 pounds
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood levels of Triglycerides (a type of fat molecule)
  • High blood cholesterol level
  • Not doing adequate exercise
 
Symptoms
Diabetes or high blood levels of glucose usually give rise to various problems like frequent urination, excessive thirst, hunger, fatigue, weight loss and blurred vision. However, these could be quite different in Type 2 diabetes since it develops slowly while some people don’t experience any symptoms in any way. It is recommended for everyone over 45 of age to get check-ups done in every 3 years.
 
Treatment
Diabetes has no cure. It is said that prevention is better than cure. This implies for diabetes too, and more because this disease is incurable. The treatment for diabetes, what all one can do is taking medicines, following diet and doing exercise to control blood sugar and prevent symptoms.
 
  • Every diabetic must take extra care of their diet. The diet should be healthy and nutritious, avoiding fatty and fried foods. 
  • They should know how to recognize and treat low blood sugar & high blood sugar.
  • They must know how to take insulin and oral medication, and how to test and record blood glucose themselves.
  • Diabetics must do self-monitoring to keep a check on their blood sugar levels.
  • Regular exercising is essential for diabetics because it helps to control blood sugar and high blood pressure.
  • Diabetics should take care and keep a check of their feet since they are prone to foot problems.
To conclude, it can be said that prevention is always better than cure. Diabetes is an incurable disease, which affects the whole body. People at risk should get themselves screened time and over because you never know when things go wrong.
