When you think of a good lawn, you think of a nicely manicured carpet of grass spread across it. All green, soft and healthy! You need not have to cut short your imagination at that as not just 5-star hotels, but even your house can sport such lawns. Infact you will be surprised how simple the process of planting grass is. Read this article to learn how.
Step One –You need to purchase top quality seeds for growing grass. The best grass seeds are specially produced for green grass color. They are also disease and insect resilient apart from being tolerant to drought.
Step Two – Prepare the soil
For New Lawn
- Loosen up the uppermost two to three inches of the soil.
- Separate away the debris like sticks, stones, etc. from that area.
- Disintegrate big soil clumps.
- Small soil clumps will do, but avoid breaking them further down to fine soil.
- Smoothen out the areas where extra water might gather.
- Fertilize after seeding with a starter fertilizer.
- Do not use weed killers prior or post planting the grass seed.
For Over-seeding Existing Lawn
- Mow down the grass as small as possible.
- Loosen up the upper ¼-inch of soil in vacant patches.
- Take out the debris and dead grass.
- Smoothen out the areas in the grass lawn where extra water collects.
- Fertilize the vacant areas in the lawn after over-seeding with a starter fertilizer.
Step Three – Plant the grass seeds
- Distribute the grass seeds evenly with hand (when the area is small).
- When the area is large, use a hand or lawn spreader or a mechanical seeder.
- Spread out about 16 grass seeds per square inch. Too much of seeds close by will make seedlings struggle for room and nutrients. The result will be weak grass in such patches.
Step Four – Now you have to cover the grass seeds
- Gently pull over the grass seed bed so that not more than ¼-inch of soil envelopes the grass seeds.
- Cover the grass seed bed with starter fertilizer to keep the seeds in place and store moisture.
Step Five – Water frequently
- Keep the bed of the grass seed moist to help in germination.
- Water the lawn lightly (do not drench) regularly. This should be done at least once daily till the new grass (sprouting from the seeds) is two inches high.
- Water new grass religiously to keep their roots wet.
