Year 2007 Highlights

As the year 2007 draws to a close, we sit back and take time to analyze the highs and lows of this year. For some, this was a year of high hopes and achievements, for some it bought grief and for some, it just couldn’t have been better! The year 2007 was a mixed bag, with a little high and a little low, but on the whole, there were no major regrets. Let us look back on some of the top happenings in India is the year 2007, the year that was. We, at iloveindia wish everyone A Very Happy and a Prosperous New Year 2008!
  1. Economically, the year was quite good for India with the Sensex zooming away like a rocket launcher! There were celebrations as the rupee appreciated against dollar and the Sensex touch 20,000. The economy is booming and the growth is calculated to be around 10%. All the more reason the finance minister should be flashing his 1000 watt smile!  Mukesh Ambani became one of the richest men in the world. The year 2007 was quite eventful on the mergers and acquisition scene as Tata Steel acquired Corus Steel to become one of the largest steel makers, the flamboyant Vijay Mallya acquired Whyte & Mackay (W&M), the fourth-largest Scotch whisky producer in the world while Aditya Birla Group took over Novelis and became the world's largest aluminum rolling company.
  2. The year 2007 was quite stable politically and India was able to make its mark on the world map. The environment was peaceful on the whole, except for a few internal tensions here and there. With a lady president governing us, India has set an example for others that women are no less than men, even when it comes to ruling the largest democracy of the world.
  3. The biggest wedding of the year, Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan became a national calamity of sorts with every channel showing (blurred) photographs and claiming “you-saw-it-first-here”, over and over again. Some were amused, others, were not! News channels need to be taught the difference between ‘breaking news’ and ‘breaking the news’!
  4. Sports buffs had reasons to celebrate with overflowing beer mugs as India won the Twenty-20 World Cup in South Africa. Saurav Ganguly made a fantastic comeback, one that would be the perfect script for a Bollywood movie! Dhoni, Kumble and Yuvraj proved their mettle by giving fabulous performances. With the huge success of the Bollywood movie “Chak De India”, our national game Hockey got a facelift and a new coach, who managed to pull out victory for the Indian team after a really long time.
  5. Entertainment was at its peak with surprise hits in Bollywood. Shah Rukh Khan cannot apparently stop smiling with two major hits, Chak De and Om Shanti Om. Though Saawariya did not score at the box office, the fresh new faces, Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor generated a huge fan following. TV was ruled by reality shows, which in turn is ruled by high melodrama! Shahid Kapoor finally makes people take notice in the surprise hit of the year “Jab We Met”. Madhuri Dixit’s comeback created hype, though the movie didn’t! This year, Bollywood gave out melodious tunes with composers like Pritam, Vishal-Shekhar and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy delivering hits on hits.
