For advancement in technology, sky is the limit! NEC corp. Japan has launched the world’s fastest supercomputer. The new model is a vector type supercomputer and is called SX-9. The credentials of this new supercomputer look very impressive. The central processing unit processes information at the speed of a breathtaking 102.4 gigaflops (one billion floating point operations per second).
One single unit of the SX-9 can be connected to 16 CPU’s at a time and when connected to 512 units, the given information can processed at a speed of a mind boggling 839 teraflops. For the uninitiated, one teraflop is equal to one trillion floating point operation per second. This high-speed computer is one of its kind in the world and can perform huge operations in a matter of minutes.
The supercomputer can conduct complex calculations in seconds, thus making it very useful in the field of scientific and technical computations. The supercomputer would be helpful in space research programs, aeronautics, fluid dynamics, climatic phenomena, environmental simulations, etc. The NEC Corporation is planning to start the shipment of its supercomputer by March next year. The product can be rented at a whopping $26,043 (2.98 million yen) per month. It is expected that around 700 units will sell in a time period of three years.
