After watching 'Videsh', we got reminded of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's 'Provoked', though only to a certain extent. As far as the aspect of domestic violence is concerned, the two movies are quite comparable, but the similarity ends there only. The twist in the tale, in 'Videsh', comes in the form of the injection of a folktale; more precisely Girish Karnad's play Naag Mandala. As Deepa Mehta injects myth into the movie, 'Videsh' starts becoming less and less convincing and you fail to relate to it.Though the plot of 'Videsh' was expected to be unconventional, the 'cobra' aspect made it implausible. You can easily relate to the domestic abuse that Chand (Preity Zinta) receives from her husband and in-laws. In fact, many-a-times, it touches deep inside your soul. However, the 'sheshnaag' part is difficult to digest. There are some other flaws in the movie as well; say the reason for the abuse has not been put across convincingly. Technically speaking, we wish that the cinematography was not so dark.
All said and done, 'Videsh' is a movie you watch for Preity ZInta. She has given an exceptionally brilliant, award-winning performance in the movie, enacting the pain and helplessness of an abused woman perfectly. The newcomer Vansh Bhardwaj is very impressive and plays his part with precision. Balinder Johal is effective as the vicious mother-in-law. Even the actress who played the part of Chand's sister-in-law was convincing. If you are looking for good performances, and can ignore the bit absurdity in its story, you can spend money on 'Videsh'.
Videsh Pre-release Review
For Preity Zinta fans the wait is now over, as the dimpled actress will soon be seen on the big screen in the movie 'Videsh'. A directorial venture of Deepa Mehta, the movie has Preity Zinta and Vansh Bharadwaj in the main lead. Other actors, who play a prominent role in the film, are Balinder Johal, Rajinder Singh Cheema, Gourrav Sihan, Geetika Sharma and Ramanjit Kaur. Coming under the banner B. R. Films, Videsh is produced by David Hamilton. The music of the movie is given by Mychael Danna.
Though the film was earlier titled 'Heaven on Earth', the name was changed to Videsh. Set in foreign land or Videsh, the film centers on the life of a young woman Chand, who leaves her home and family, behind in India, to start a new life in Canada, with her husband, Rocky, and her in-laws. Moving to Brampton, Ontario, Chand soon faces the complexity of a married life. Since Rocky is the sole bread-earner of his family, he is burdened with the responsibility of shifting the base of his entire family including his sister, her husband and their two children to Canada.
To top it all off, Rocky is just a cab driver and his salary is not enough to meet his needs and requirements. Chand, on the other hand, feels locked and trapped in a world she cannot relate to. Though she is a bright and educated woman, Chand is subjected to the abuse and mistreatment from her in-laws. They expect her to become a slave to their needs, as if this were not enough, Rocky, wearied down with the additional responsibilities, takes out all his frustrations on Chand. Taking up the job of cleaning and pressing hotel napkins in a factory, she meets Rosa.
Rosa sees past Chand's make-up face only to realize the badly bruised marks. She gifts Chand a magical root, which is supposed to bring out the love of the recipient. Though Chand uses the potion, she finds the result, i.e. of extreme care and support, too baffling to believe. Desperate to run away from this traumatized life, Chand begins to fantasize another version of her life, which interlaces an ancient Indian fable about a King Cobra. Will Chand come over her distressed life? Will Rocky be considerate to his wife? The answers to these questions will only be revealed only on 27th March, 2009, its release date.
