With the fuel prices going up there is a growing interest for alternative fuel or battery powered vehicle in the world. Ultra Motors plans to launch bikes which operate on electricity rather than conventional fuel like petrol. Ultra Motor plans to launch a host of battery powered vehicles in India, but initially the launch will be limited to one bicycle, one scooter and one motorcycle.
These vehicles will be powered by an electric motor and they can be charged by plugging into an electric outlet or while in the move as well. The running costs of these vehicles are very low, about 10 paise per kilometre as opposed to petrol, which is roughly about 65-80 paise per kilometre.
The bicycle is likely to be priced between Rs.8,000-Rs.10,000 while the moped will cost between Rs.12,000-Rs.14,000. On the other hand the scooter will be priced at Rs.16,000 at the time of its launch. However, these products will not be manufactured by the company itself; rather these will be manufactured through various partnerships that the company is looking out for. It is seeking some contract manufacturers, and is in talks with two-wheeler majors as well.
The manufacturer which takes the contract to manufacture these machines will be handed over the technology and will also be provided with the spares support. The maximum speeds that these machines can achieve will be limited and these battery powered vehicles will be able to run about 100 km on a full charge. The company, however, seems very confident that inspite of these small limitations, there will be takers for these kind of machines.
