The Book
The Bioscope Man, is about the ideas that makes us think - love and languages breaching the boundaries and defining the very identities that we have. It is a very beautifully written book. The main theme of the book revolves around the world of cinema or bioscope as it is known and the many faces that it has.
One can see the authenticity which Hazra has imbibed while writing his third novel after The Burnt Forehead of Max Saul and The Garden of Earthly Delights. His latest novel is based during the 1920s and it focuses on its protagonist, Abani Chatterjee who wants to be the first silent-star of India.
Abani starts his career as the assistant of a projectionist at the Alochhaya Theatre and slowly climbs his way into being a prompter. As luck would have it, he ends up playing the title-character of Prahalad Parameshwar. He later on also grabs the roles of Othello, Ram, Parasuram and Shivaji. All his silent movies become a great hit with the public. Subsequently, he starts getting recognition in street corners, market places and cafes. He almost received his share of fame and success, but just then tragedy strikes and he becomes an outcast in the world of bioscope.
This is a dark novel but still one enjoys the finer nuances of the story. Will Abani be able to get back on track? What follows is a very sad and touching story about the longing for fame. Read the novel, The Bioscope Man to know more.
