Anil Kapoor, as the egotistic host of the show, is excellent, while Irrfan Khan, as the cop, and Mahesh Manjerekar, as the local don, are pretty effective. The story of “Slumdog Millionaire” revolves around Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), an uneducated slum dweller who is a contestant of “Kaun Banega Crorepati”, the Indian version of the popular game show - “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” Being uneducated, he is not expected to have all the answers to the questions asked in the quiz, which he ends up replying right. Consequently, he is accused of cheating and is tortured to find out how he cheated.
The narrative of “Slumdog Millionaire” is the explanation of how Jamal knew the answers to all the questions. The story opens up the horrific life of Jamal and the way he reached the “hot seat” of the TV quiz. He then recalls the day his mother was killed by an anti-Muslim Hindu mob, during an anti-Muslim riots in the slums and how he and his elder brother Salim (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail) made friends with orphaned girl, Latika (Freida Pinto).
The highlighting feature of “Slumdog Millionaire” is the way it is narrated. It depicts the life of Jamal and his elder brother Salim (Madhur Mittal), who are among the uneducated and uncared for children, living in trash heaps. They are manipulated and groomed to become street hustlers and pick-pocketers. The film “Slumdog Millionaire” is an emotional roller-coaster ride, which keeps the viewers hooked to it with its sequence of events.
