If you are tired of the run-of-the-mill Bollywood stories and want to take a break, you might opt for 'Siddharth - The Prisoner'. An offbeat film, it has already won accolades at film festivals, apart from the Grand Jury Award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. However, even though the movie is based on a good concept - 'renunciation of desire', it fails to present it across with conviction. One of the biggest flaws that we encountered was that there has been no mention of why was Siddharth convicted and why did his wife leave him.

Agreed, 'Siddharth - The Prisoner' is an offbeat movie, which will obviously be missing the pace of a commercial flick. Still, there was no need to make it so slow and slumberous. There message, of renunciation as a way to enlightenment, could not get across very clearly. The scenes have been stretched on endlessly and could have surely done with some editing. The initial buildup of narrative is too lengthy, while the twists in the second half are way too predictable, mainly because of the film's slow pace.

The climax of 'Siddharth - The Prisoner' was not much credible, with the social message being conveyed without any persuasion. The two good aspects of the film are the neat background score by Sagar Desai and the effective performances by actors. Rajat Kapoor, as usual, has delivered wonderfully, while Sachin Nayak is a surprise package. He stays in your mind even after the movie is over. If you have got nothing better to do, then you might try watching 'Siddharth' in a theater. Still, we would advise it as a strictly DVD watch.

Siddharth Pre-release Review
In the world of today, do people believe in the concept of renunciation (of desire) and, more importantly, Siddharth Moviedoes it lead to any happiness? This is the main concept behind the movie 'Siddharth - The Prisoner', directed by Pryas Gupta and scheduled for release on 27th February 2009. The movie has Alliance Media and Walkwater Media as its producers and Vistaar Religare Film Fund as the presenter. The music director of 'Siddharth', which has Rajat Kapoor and Sachin Nayak in the main roles, is Sagar Desai.

'Siddharth' starts with a focus on, just as expected, Siddharth Roy. A once-famous actor, he has just been released from prison and is looking forward to getting his new manuscript published. As he forms contacts with the outside world once again, he looks forward to regaining his lost reputation, through the book. There is another motivation behind getting the book published - reconciliation with his estranged wife, Maya. However, destiny has something else in store for Roy.

One day, Siddharth visits a cyber café and there, his briefcase, with his new manuscript in it, gets exchanged with a very similar-looking bag, which contains a huge amount of money. With this, Siddharth ends up losing the only copy of his new manuscript. On the other hand, Mohan, the cyber café manager, starts receiving threats from the mob bosses, to recover the lost money. In the meantime, with this help of a scheming housemaid, Roy is reconciled with his three year old son.

Having lost his only way to gaining back his earlier life, Siddharth goes through anguish. He loses interest in the money and has only one desire now - to get his son's custody. On the other end, Mohan comes under increasing pressure from the baddies, loses his job and is forced to go into hiding. His only chance of getting back to his normal life is in finding Siddharth and the money, at any cost. As the film moves on, we see how it explores the ancient text of Rig Veda i.e. "renunciation (of desire) is the true path to enlightenment and freedom".
