Sarkar Raj Review

Genre: Drama
Director: Ram Gopal Varma
Writer: Prashant Pandey
Star Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai
Releasing Date: 6 June 2008

Good publicity of Sarkar Raj brought people to watch Ramu’s latest movie to the cinema halls. And what has been expected, the movie surpasses the prequel, Sarkar, in every aspect. Yes, Ramu Gopal Sarkar RajVarma’s dicey business of making remakes and sequels appeared fruitful when people came out of the multiplexes with loads of praises for the movie. After Aag-the super-flop remake of Sholay, Ramu definitely has made great efforts to perk up like never before.

All you guys who have watched Shiva and Satya, and acclaimed them as the best works of Ramu, must watch Sarkar Raj. With Sarkar, Ramu had specifically established the central characters, set the feel, delineated the aura and distinguished the genre. Consequently, in the follow-up, he just had to take the story to the fore while narrating a new incident. In fact, he has succeeded in carrying the legacy ahead to a decent extent.

In the second part, Sarkar aka Subhash Nagre (Amitabh Bachchan) acquires a backseat because son Shankar Nagre (Abhishek Bachchan) takes hold of the family empire. Anita Ranjan (Aishwarya Rai), who is an NRI industrialist, approaches the Nagre family with a proposal to set up a power plant project in the local region of Maharashtra under Sarkar’s dominion. After initial disinclination, Sarkar approves the project which soon changes into a political conspiracy.

The storytelling pattern is such that the drama is initially built up and the politics behind the play is broken down later. Ramu has employed all the original techniques of Sarkar by using the same crew for the background music (Amar Mohile), editing (Amit Parmar, Nipun Gupta), and unpredictable camera angles (Amit Roy). However, while adhering to the original, Ramu has brought repetitiveness, irregularly, in the script with similar setup and shot execution.

Like, he has sketched a group of negative forces in the same manner like the villain quartet from Sarkar with objectives to crush the Nagre kingdom. To a great extent, the script has been shaped approximating the precursor film when Shankar stimulates a political war against his opponents. But the action is bit twisted since Ramu overturns the role play of the father-son duo in Sarkar Raj. As Amitabh takes a backseat in the initial part of the movie giving authority to Abhishek, he grabs charge of the events in the later half.

From a political war, the movie erratically shifts way to a standard revenge drama till it arrives to an impulsive climax that forms a highlight of the endeavor, raising the whole graph. Sarkar Raj evidently gains major stars for its clever finale, which was actually lacking from the recent movies of Ramu. Aishwarya Rai appears to be her usual self and her acting doesn’t seem to be chiseled. The Male Bachchans have proved their acting skills to the vision of Ram Gopal Varma. Overall, Sarkar Raj is an outstanding film that is definitely going to make a success story at the box-office.
