RajneetiTalk of an immaculate celluloid experience and yes, 2010 has managed to capture one in Prakash Jha’s “Raajneeti”. A take on India’s dynastic political system, the story revolves around a few people, who control the destiny of million others. Ambitious minds, power thirsty people and dirty politics lead to a summer of discoveries and realizations. Kudos to director Prakash Jha, who yet again proves himself as a master story-teller and narrator, with his political thriller that is a fusion of Mahabharata and “The Godfather”! 15 minutes into the movie and you would get nothing out of it, but it is with the narration that the plot gets crystal clear in the minds of the audience. What starts as a confusion ends in a racy affair, with the ‘bloody’ ballot war getting more and more deadly, lethal and unprincipled.

The movie unfolds a bloodline, wherein the conflict is who would surpass to the throne, even as the father is still being treated. We have Pandava-Kauravas conflict, with Arjun Rampal playing the modern-day Yudhishthir, Ranbir Kapoor enveloped in the role of Arjuna as Samar, Nana Patekar playing Krishna. Add to this, we have Samar’s vivacious childhood buddy, Indu played by Katrina Kaif and American girlfriend Sara (Sara Thompson). As for the rival camp, we have a Duryodhana in Manoj Bajpai and a Karna in Ajay Devgan. After his father’s assassination, inexperienced Samar reluctantly just slips into his family’s web of dirty politics. Then starts the brutal war and you are exposed to throat slits, cold-blooded murder, open abuses and arch rivalry. We also have the famous severed horse-head scene from “The Godfather”.

However, what lacks in the movie is the feeling of respite. The movie goes on and on, depicting the malicious and vindictive side of Indian political system. Introspection and contemplation do not exist in the dictionary of “Raajneeti”. Though there is a whole lot of dark side to the so-called democratic Indian political system, but murdering someone from the rival side at the broad daylight in front of masses is like a little too far stretched. Seems like Jha got too carried away to illustrate the gross picture and immorality! Add to this a climax scene wherein Samar gets redeemed for his evil deeds with a feeble sorry! Redemption doesn’t come that easy in real life! Had the editing of thoughts been crisper, “Raajneeti” would have fared exceptionally well.

Coming to the performance of this power-packed multi-starrer film, you have just got to relax and enjoy your popcorn, as your eyeballs pop out at every scene. Right from the vulnerable Katrina Kaif to the acting maestro Nana Patekar, everyone has chipped in their best, which adds to the beauty of the film. While Manoj Bajpai plays the role of a political contender with full conviction, Nana holds the plot together extremely well. Ajay Devgan jumps back to what he does best - playing the role of an angry man. Arjun Rampal, on the other hand, excels at his role and so does Naseerundin Shah. Credit goes to Ranbir Kapoor, who beautifully shells out his uber cool image of a young man from his previous flicks and gets into the skin of the character. Musically, “Raajneeti” is riveting. All said and done, the film surely makes a great pick if you are game to watch a compelling and gripping tale.

Rajneeti Pre-release Review
Ten times National Award winner Prakash Jha, known for making hard hitting and content based movies, is back with ‘Rajneeti’, a dark political thriller inspired by Mahabharata. The movie has been presented by Walkwater Media, under the banner UTV Motion Pictures and Prakash Jha Productions. The film has a strong star cast that is just the perfect blend of youth and experience. Wayne Sharpe has given the music of the movie, while Gulzar, Sameer and Swanand Kirkire have penned down the lyrics. With politics as the base, the movie deals on eradicating corruption from our country. The movie is set for a 4th June, 2010 release.

‘Rajneeti’ describes the journey of a woman, right from fighting against corruption to becoming the Prime Minister. The lead role has been played by Katrina Kaif who plays a politician, apparently inspired by Sonia Gandhi. The movie revolves around few people who are in quest to control the destiny of billions of Indian people. Bhaskar Sanyal (Naseeruddin Shah) is a fire-brand leftist leader, known for his single-handed ability to challenge the most powerful leaders. All is well with him until one private mistake leads him into self-imposed exile. Sooraj Kumar (Ajay Devgan) rises from the backward class to fight for his country, with anger in his heart and leadership on his mind.

The movie also includes Prithviraj Pratap (Arjun Rampal), an heir to a powerful political legacy. Though Prithiviraj has a heart of gold, it is his impatience that lands his family into the brink of political extinction. Indu Sakseria (Katrina Kaif), a beautiful, passionate and arrogant princess had only one all-consuming love. Her personal happiness undergoes a devastating earthquake, which leads to her transformation, from being a diva to a never-say-die politician. Samar Pratap (Ranbir Kapoor), a foreign youngster and Prithviraj’s brother, too is forcefully sucked into the ballet ravage arena of family rivalry, only to turn into a master of the craft of political warfare. The story portrays his determination to protect his family in the bloodiest of political battle.

A spoof on Indian democracy, the movie captures the true state of Indian election campaigns wherein while money, power and corruption show the way, treachery and manipulation are routinely used weapons. It also spotlights on the sacrifice of love and friendship at the altar of political alignments. Ranbir Kapoor would be seen donning a manipulative character for the very first time. Shot across different locales in Bhopal with over five thousand trained actors from all over Madhya Pradesh, Prakash Jha promises ‘Rajneeti’ to be one of the most exciting and ambitious ventures. Wait till June 4, 2010  to check out the ugly underside of Indian politics.
