Instructions
  • As the first step towards growing a raised vegetable garden, you need to choose the ideal location for the same. After you have decided on the site, it is the time to start digging, until the dirt forms the depth of your bed. This will assure proper drainage.
  • Draw a basic design of the shape as well as size of the garden bed. In keeping with this, take measurements of the garden. Now, you will be required to choose the lumber and cut into desired lengths, on the basis of the measurements taken beforehand.
  • In case you are planning to go for square-shaped garden, you will need four lumbers, of the same length. If it is a rectangle-shape that you have set your heart on, two lumbers of one length and two of another would be required. As for a triangle, there will be three lumbers of equal lengths.
  • Now is the time to give the desired shape to your raised bed vegetable garden. For the purpose, start connecting the lumber sides together. Cut 4 x 4 inch post and place them in each corner of the raised bed, making sure to secure the latter to these posts.
  • Get the garden plastic or weed mat and cut it in the required size, depending upon the measurements of the garden. Place it in the location that you had dug earlier. This will help prevent the growth of weeds in your raised bed vegetable garden.
  • In the next step, you will have to place the raised bed over the garden plastic. Now, spread the composted manure over the bottom of your raised bed, covering it fully. Top the manure with a thick layer of rich, organic potting soil.
  • Your raised bed garden is complete. Now, all you have to do is plant the vegetables in it, making sure to keep some space in rows, starting from the north. The plants that would grow up to be tall will go in the north end of the garden, to ensure that the shorter ones receive sunlight as well.
