Malaysia’s biggest carmaker, Proton is prepared to enter the Indian market with a slew of small cars and Sedans. This information was recently announced by a high level executive from the company who’s a part of the delegation visiting India with the Malaysian trade minister, Rafidah Aziz. Officials from Proton are, therefore, busy surveying the business prospects and possibilities that the Indian market will proffer them once they set up business here.
Proton officials said they looked upon India as a hugely important market, which is highly competitive but at the same time offers a good scope to grow. The main cause behind the severe competitiveness in the markets in India is the international original equipment makers (OEMs) who have introduced here all their recent models and technology. The Malaysian carmakers, thus, too nurture a desire to become a long term player in India and are fervently working to achieve this goal.
The Malaysia’s biggest carmaker is said to have a capacity of manufacturing 3,00,000 cars with an added 40,000 units at its Indonesian plant. Proton is known to have sold off around 28,000 cars to the Middle East, South Africa, Australia, United Kingdom and Asean. Proton already exists in India through a subsidiary, the UK based Lotus Engineering. This Proton subsidiary operates a designing centre at Bangalore. Proton has entered the Chinese market with a few car models and is now eyeing the Indian auto sector.
