We went to watch ‘My Name is Anthony Gonsalves’ with ‘Amitabh Bachchan’s song’ in mind and what we got was a disappointing affair in return. E Niwas has hardly managed to keep the audience glued to their seats with this venture. The line from the hit number has also been totally wasted. The movie does not come even slightly near to being entertaining, let alone be as engaging as the song itself (forget the entire movie). The biggest problem with ‘My Name is Anthony Gonsalves’ is that it appears amusing in just bits and pieces.
E Niwas has tried to present an ordinary idea in an extra-ordinary way, but somehow failed in the process. The movie seems to be too stretched and this is one of the main reasons why it fails to impress. Though we can see the excellence of E Niwas in quite a few portions of the movie, it fails to appeal to the audience as a package. As far as the performances are concerned, all the actors – right from Lillette Dubey and Mithun Chakraborthy to Anupam Kher and Pawan Malhotra are excellent. However, the script fails to support them in the endeavor!
May Name is Anthony Gonsalves Pre Release Review
The latest movie to be produced under the banner of ‘Sahara Motion One Pictures’ is ‘My Name is Anthony Gonsalves’. The story revolves around the life of Anthony Gonsalves (Nikhil Dwivedi), an ordinary guy who has an extra-ordinary dream - of becoming a hero. In reality, he works as a bartender in a pub in Bandra (Mumbai), known as Jimmy\'s Pub. Apart from mixing drinks, he has to ensure that the pub runs smoothly, without any problems.
The pub is owned by Sikander, Maqsood, and Riyaaz, three goons, whose main work comprises of illegal activities, with the pub as their legal front. Anthony, an orphan, finds his benefactor in one of these - Sikander (Pawan Malhotra). As we go back into time, we see that it was Sikander who lifted Anthony off the streets and handed him over to Father Briganza (Mithun Chakraborthy). Sikander treats Anthony like a small brother and Anthony considers him as his ‘God’.
This is the main reason why Anthony never gets involved in illegal activities and only knows the better side of Sikander. While working for the pub, Anthony becomes friends with Moorthy (Saurabh Shukla), a one-time cameraman. It is the latter who gives him leads about where to go and whom to meet. At the same time, by showing confidence in Anthony, he leads the boy to daydream about his would-be stardom. Obviously, Father Briganza doesn’t let him get too far.
While we are looking at Anthony and his dreams, the story about the three goons also starts unfolding. The gang, of which Sikander, Maqsood, and Riyaaz are a part, is headed by Murtuza Seth (Anupam Kher), who trusts Sikander more than Maqsood (his nephew). This obviously leads to fighting within the gang. Somewhere alongside, we see a love story coming into light - when Anthony meets Riya Pereira (Amrita Rao) at the cemetery.
He again meets her when he goes for an audition for a film being made by an NRI Filmmaker, Ms. Bharucha (Lilette Dubey). Riya is the Assistant Director on the film. Anthony ultimately gets the role and rushes to tell Sikander the same. This is when he involuntarily becomes a witness to a crime committed by the gang. Now comes the entry of Inspector Khan (Javed Sheikh) and in course of time, he pin downs Anthony as a witness.
He starts pursuing Anthony with resolute determination. To top that, the gang believes Anthony of being a traitor and spilling the beans. With this, a lot of melodrama and emotions comes into the movie. This is the time for Anthony to decide what he wants more - Sikander Bhai or the chance of attaining his childhood dream. What will Anthony do? Will he sacrifice friendship for his dreams? To know the answer, watch the movie!
