After the introduction of VCDs and DVDs priced at just Rs. 28 and Rs. 38 respectively, the world’s second largest optical media manufacturer Moser Baer has made another exhilarating announcement that’s bound to bring about significant changes in the consumer electronics segment in India. If its ongoing talks with electronic giants like Philips, LG, Samsung and Mirc materializes, a joint venture will soon see the manufacture of VCD and DVD players in India pegged at a mere Rs 1000 and Rs 1500 respectively.
A study reveals that there are about 26 million VCD and DVD users in the country and this figure is continuously burgeoning at the rate of 25 per cent per annum. As such, there’s ample room for the growth of home video in India especially when it comprises only 7 per cent of the total Rs 7,900 crore revenue generated by the domestic film industry. The plan is to use Moser Baer showrooms as selling points for these low-end players.
