Like any other essential oils lemon oil has also a diverse range of uses as it has numerous health properties. The aroma of lemon oil is said to be sharp and fresh which makes it an excellent remedy for cold. Lemon oil is pale greenish yellow and its viscosity is far less than other types of oils. In fact lemon oil is as viscous as water. Lemon oil is extensively used in aromatherapy and fragrance therapy. It also has a variety of daily uses. However, in aromatherapy its shelf life can go to a maximum of 10 months but it can be used for longer periods in fragrance therapy. Lemon oil is extracted from the lemon fruit, more specifically the peel of the fruit. While the fruit has numerous medicinal properties it is the oil that has far more extensive use. In India where the lemon originated, the lemon oil has been used for centuries in traditional medicines.

  • Lemon oil is a very effective vaporizer. It can be used for a variety of common ailments like colds, voice loss, flu, depression, stress, lack of energy and fatigue.
  • Lemon oil can be used to relieve irritation. It is also known to improve concentration by clearing the mind. It also lifts the spirits when the body and mind is laid low and improves the decision making capabilities.
  • This oil is extensively used in aromatherapy in blended massage oils. When it is diluted in bath water it is known to provide relief against digestive problems, lack of energy and fatigue, rheumatism, depression, stress and obesity. It can also be used as a general topic.
  • Congested skin can be cleared by using lemon oil as a cream or lotion. People with oily skin can benefit a lot by applying lemon oil on the skin as it has excellent astringent properties.
  • Lemon oil also has rich antiseptic properties. So, it helps in treating any types of cuts, boils and other minor wounds.
  • It is also believed that lemon oil is very effective against acne as it has rubefacient action. For the same properties it can also be used to sort out cellulite.
  • Lemon oil, when diluted in warm water can be used to gargle. This is an excellent mouthwash. In case of mouth ulcers if lemon juice is used to gargle then it can provide relief against the ulcers.

  • Lemon oil can be effectively used as a disinfectant. Simply play lemon oil on the surface using a spray bottle. Other than disinfecting the surfaces lemon oil will also spread a soothing fragrance around the house. To use as a disinfectant you can also use lemon oil with other essential oils.
  • Lemon juice can also be used as a cleaning agent. One can effectively use lemon juice to clean the furniture and bathroom wares. Mix lemon juice with baking soda and use it to clean sinks, utensils and other items.

To give washed clothes a refreshing smell apply a few drops of lemon juice to the water with which you are washing the clothes.
