Release Date: 16th May, 2008

The first thing that hits you after watching Jannat is that its story is different and somewhat refreshing. After all those romantic movies and thrillers, a film based on cricket and betting, though not entirely, seems to be a welcome change. However, do not expect too much from Jannat. The film does move around the theme of betting and match fixing, but does not delve too deep. So, forget any detailing about the intricacies involved in it. From a person involved in small-time card games to being a bookie and then a match fixer, Arjun (Emraan Hashmi) takes the leap after falling in love with Zoya (Sonal Chauhan), at first sight.

The problem here is that the transformation, which demanded some time, was quickly wrapped up in one song. As the film moves further, we see Arjun in a moral dilemma, whether to stick to his new-found success or stick to his love. Just when he is about to get out of the dilemma, he is lured by Don (Jawed Sheikh) to South Africa. Zoya disapproves of his immoral ways and leaves him. How Arjun manages to get out of the mess and win his love back is what we seen in the second half. On the whole, the movie is not too bad. However, it seriously lacks in certain aspects.

The screen play of the movie is not too good and even the story lacks strength on a number of occasions. The good part is that the dialogues compensate for the weakness to quite an extent, being simple and generating a few laughs too. The music is good, especially the two songs ‘Zara sa’ and ‘Jannat jaha’. Even the cinematography is commendable. As far as the performances go, none of the actors was extra-ordinary. Emraan Hashmi was his usual self, neither too good, nor too bad. As for Sonal Chauhan, she looks good and could have done a better job. In short, an average movie!

Jannat Pre-release Review
Jannat is a movie that is directed by Kunal Deshmukh and is produced by Mukesh Bhatt. It comes with moral that ‘money buys a lot, but not everything’. Though it does not boast of an impressive star-cast, it Jannathas Emraan Hashmi and a new actress from the Bhatt camp, Sonal Chauhan in the lead roles. The film also stars Samir Kochhar, Vishal Malhotra and Javed Sheikh in supporting roles. The music is already soaring up the charts and the promos look pretty good.

The story revolves around a reckless young man named Arjun (Hashmi) who is obsessed about making quick money. He meets a girl named Zoya and falls in love with her. He then moves on to become a bookie and fixes matches on a big scale. Within a short span of time he reaches dizzying heights of success and money making. This attracts the attention of the police who try to nab him. He now has to make a choice between the lady he loves and a tempting offer of unlimited money and police protection from a don mafia.

The movie is shot almost entirely in India and has some good foot-tapping songs. To make it even better, Jannat is going to be premiered in Pakistan as well. The movie is based on match fixing and the director has taken extreme precaution not to give rise to any kind of controversy regarding similarity to any cricket players. The new actress from the Bhatt camp, Sonal Chauhan is the 14th girl to be launched with Emraan Hashmi and it needs to be seen how popular she becomes. She has been a former model and has done some television ads and print ads. She was also crowned Miss World Tourism in 2005.
