How to Plant Tulip Bulbs 
  • You need to be careful while choosing the variety of tulips you want to plant. Hybrid tulips give beautiful blooms for the first time but the quality deteriorates as and when time goes on. Some species like Tulipa Greigii and T. Kaufmanniana produce flowers for many years and may even produce more than one flower per bulb.
  • You can buy high-quality bulbs, which should be free of cuts, bruises and soft spots. The best place to look for tulip bulbs is your local nursery. You may also want to check reputed websites and mail-order catalogs.
  • The best seasons to start planting tulip bulbs is in early fall for cold winter regions and late fall to early winter for regions that have mild temperature. Make sure you have the bulbs at least some five to six weeks prior to actual planting. Depending on the type of tulip bulb you have, you may need to refrigerate it in order to have high quality blooms.
  • You need to select a location in your garden where there is plenty of sun light and apt drainage. Dig in 2 inches of compost before you start planting the bulbs.
  • Take the size of the bulb into consideration and dig holes around 6-8 inches. You need to dig holes in a pattern that it looks clustered, not lined up. Instead of digging individual holes, you can dig one big hole or a trench and then plant the bulbs.
  • Mix some rock phosphate at the bottom of the hole and blend it roughly with the soil. Try not to use fertilizers that may comprise of fish bone since it attracts squirrels or rats that may nibble the bulb and damage it.
  • After planting the bulbs, cover it up with the top soil but don’t cover it too tight. The bulbs may die of lack of air if too much soil is put on top in a tight way. Water regularly and by spring, you should have your first beautiful bunch of tulips!
