Clean Your House

  • Clear the ripe fruits and vegetables off your kitchen countertops. You can either eat them or refrigerate them.
  • Clean the dishwasher and check for the presence of grime in the bottom as well as in its filter.
  • Keep the surfaces of the sink dry when not in use.
  • Flush the garbage disposals with drain cleaners.
  • Empty the trash cans regularly and put tight lids on them when they are filled with garbage.
  • Vacuum-dry the carpet, in case of moisture is locked in it.
  • Seal the drains by putting plastic food storage bag over them, if you find the fruit flies breeding down there.
  • Spray small doses of insecticides on the potted plants.
Set The Trap
  • Pour two tsp of vinegar and a few drops of cooking oil in a midsize bowl. Now, cover the top with plastic wrap. Poke several small holes in the wrap with a fork and keep it in the area of infestation. This will attract the fruit flies, which would be trapped in it.
  • A portable bug zapper is an inexpensive way to go about killing the fruit flies. Not only is this method cheap, it also kills the bugs instantly. While using a bug zapper, ensure that all the lights are turned off in the area of infestation.
  • You may also make use of a fly paper to eradicate the flies. Hang the paper near a bright light and just look at how the flies are attracted to it, but are not able to move off!
  • Pour two tsp of fruit juice or soda in a two-liter narrow-necked bottle and add a few drops of cooking oil. You may also use beer, vinegar or apple cider for the purpose. Now, place the bottle in the area of infestation and watch the bugs getting trapped in it!
